In the demanding world of healthcare, stress and burnout are all too common. Recognizing the need for holistic wellness, our hospital’s Case Management department embarked on a transformative journey—a Forest Therapy walk in our very own Healing Garden.
The Healing Garden: A Sanctuary Within the Hospital
Nestled between bustling hospital wings, our Healing Garden serves as a serene retreat for staff, patients, and visitors alike. Designed to promote healing and tranquility, this green oasis offers a much-needed escape from the clinical environment, reminding us that nature’s touch is never far away.
An Early Morning Rejuvenation
At 7:30 AM, as the first light of day graced the horizon, our team gathered in the cool morning air. The early hour symbolized a fresh start, allowing us to shed our professional roles temporarily and embrace the simplicity of being present in nature. The gentle rustling of leaves and the chorus of awakening birds provided a soothing backdrop, grounding us in the moment.
Nature as a Gateway to Self-Connection
Forest Therapy, rooted in the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku, emphasizes mindful immersion in nature to enhance well-being. As we slowly wandered the garden paths, we engaged our senses fully—feeling the texture of leaves, inhaling the earthy scents, and listening to the subtle symphony of nature. This sensory engagement fostered a profound connection to both the environment and our inner selves.
A Sensory “Potion” of Connection
One of the walk’s highlights was the creation of a collective “potion.” Each participant selected a natural element—a fragrant leaf, a delicate flower, a piece of bark—that resonated with them. Combining these, we crafted a unique blend that encapsulated our shared experience. This simple yet profound activity heightened our sensory awareness and deepened our bond as a team.
Lavender Tea & Connection: A Calming Conclusion
We concluded our walk with a calming ritual of lavender tea and cookies. Gathered in a circle, we sipped the warm tea, allowing its soothing properties to permeate our senses. This moment of shared stillness reinforced the importance of pausing and connecting, both with nature and each other, before re-entering the day’s demands.
The Importance of Self-Care in the Workplace
This experience underscored a vital lesson: self-care is not a luxury but a necessity, especially in high-stress professions like healthcare. By integrating practices such as Forest Therapy into our routines, we can alleviate stress, enhance mental clarity, and foster a more compassionate work environment.
Expanding the Practice: Bringing Forest Therapy to Organizations
The success of our walk has inspired a broader initiative to incorporate Forest Therapy into our workplace wellness programs. Organizations seeking to improve employee well-being might consider similar practices, which can be tailored to various settings—from hospital gardens to nearby parks.
A Path Toward Healing and Connection
Our Forest Therapy walk was more than a moment of rest—it was a reminder of our humanity, our need for stillness, and the healing power of nature. As we continue navigating the challenges of modern work and life, this practice offers a gentle path back to balance, clarity, and connection.
If you’re curious about bringing Forest Therapy to your team, organization, or private group, I’d love to connect and explore what that could look like for you. Every group is different, and we can co-create an experience that fits your unique needs and goals.
Feel free to send me a private message to start the conversation—I’m here when you’re ready. 🌿
