Forest Bathing walks, also known as Forest Therapy, are guided slow walks in nature that involve a sensory immersion in the forest. These walks take full advantage of the myriad scientifically documented benefits of nature for health and well-being. These are not fitness walks; they do not involve naturalist education. On a Forest Therapy walk, participants are invited to reconnect with nature through sensory awareness. Dr. Jones is in training with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Guides and Programs (ANFT) to become a Forest Therapy Guide. Since 2012, ANFT has trained 850 guides who practice in 55 countries on six continents worldwide. Forest Therapy, as practiced by ANFT, is inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku, hence the term, Forest Bathing. In addition to experiencing the health benefits of time spent in nature, ANFT Forest Therapy includes the mission of nurturing heart-centered relationships between all peoples and the more-than-human world. Maybe the best thing about Forest Bathing is that there is no right or wrong way to do it. Just come as you are. No advance preparation is needed other than arriving ten minutes early for the walk and dressing appropriately for the weather. We will walk rain or shine, except when there is lightning or an extended downpour. The paths are well groomed on rolling terrain.
A typical walk will have from one to ten participants, usually covers less than a mile, and lasts between about two to two and a half hours. The walks proceed at a pace and in a manner that is personally suited for each person. The motto of the ANFT is, “The forest is the therapist, the guide opens the doors.”

Full Moon Forest Bathing at the LA Arboretum. Inspired by the Japanese practice of shinrin yoku, Forest Bathing has been scientifically proven to boost immune strength, reduce stress, and improve cognitive functioning. But beyond these physiological changes, Forest Bathing also offers us the opportunity to deepen our relationship with the natural world. By slowing down and carefully observing with all our senses, we may begin to notice incredible things that may have eluded us for our whole lives. In escaping the rapid pace of our daily routines, we may find unparalleled beauty in the moment and in doing so, relax into the beauty all around us. On your walk, a certified guide will offer a series of guided invitations to assist you in finding your own authentic way of interacting with the land at the Los Angeles Arboretum. There’s no right or wrong way to do it and it’s great for all ages; just come and be yourself. It’s all welcome in the forest.
