WOOCS v.2.3.7

Join a small group of other members of the RCTC community, and experience nature’s power to soothe, refresh, and open your heart. The Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku (Forest Bathing in English) is a slow, sensory-based walk in the woods, during which we focus on the sights, sounds, smells, feels, and tastes of nature. This is neither a naturalist exploration nor a fitness trek; this walk is about soaking in the health benefits of relaxed time in nature. It’s also about tending to and mending our relationships with nature, ourselves, and others. There are no requirements – just come as you are. Our walk will take place on a particularly historic portion of the Rachel, adjacent to Crouse Run and a part of the Pine Creek watershed. The trail is flat and includes two shallow creek crossings. There will be opportunities to wade in the creek (optional), so bring waterproof boots or water shoes, if you’re so inclined. Who knows what surprises nature will have in store for us? Our guide, Douglas Jones, Ph.D., was certified by the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Guides and Programs in 2020. Since then, Doug has guided over 130 walks in Pittsburgh and in Northwestern Michigan. He has guided walks for the VA and the Children’s Hospital staff wellness programs, nursing students at Duquesne Univeristy, as well as for Juniper Village and Providence Point Senior Communities. He regularly guides walks at Pittsburgh Botanic Garden and for the Women’s Adventure Club of Western PA. If you have questions, contact Doug using the link below, or at douglasjonesphd@gmail.com or send him a text at 412-303-6073.
