The Beauty of Slowing Down at Seneca Creek State Park

by | May 17, 2025 | General

I guide my Forest Therapy walks in a beautiful natural area not far from home—a space where people can take a break from their fast-paced lives and gently reconnect with themselves and the living world around them. Each walk is a little different, shaped by the weather, the season, and the people who show up.

Today, I want to give you a glimpse into one of those walks—a recent experience that reminded me just how powerful it can be to slow down, listen to our senses, and let nature support us.

The Power of Slowing Down

On this particular walk, I had the honor of guiding a group of truly incredible people. Each one arrived with their own story and their own life circumstances—and yet, they all made the same brave choice: to pause, to unplug, and to simply be.

In a culture that rewards constant motion, setting aside 2.5 hours to do nothing but be can feel radical. But this kind of stillness is a deeply nourishing act of self-care. When we slow down and tune in, something inside us shifts. We make space for breath, for noticing, for reconnection.

And that’s exactly what happened on this walk.

Nature’s Gentle Invitations

Unlike a hike, where there’s a destination and a goal, Forest Therapy is about being with the forest, not getting through it. I guide a gentle sequence of invitations—playful, sensory prompts that help participants connect more deeply with their surroundings.

One of our invitations was to notice motion. Some people observed the wind moving through the trees. Others watched the ripple of water on the lake. A few leaned into their playful side—balancing on logs or jumping in leaves.

There’s no right or wrong way to experience these invitations. Everyone connects in their own way, and everyone receives exactly what they need. That’s part of the magic.

Sharing, Listening, and Being Seen

One of my favorite parts of every walk is the sharing circle. It’s a chance to speak from the heart and to listen with presence—not to fix or judge, but simply to witness.

People shared what they noticed: the temperature of a tree trunk, the feel of bark under their fingertips, the smell of earth, the emotion that rose up out of nowhere.

These moments of reflection reminded us that we are not just walking through nature—we’re forming a relationship with it. And with each other.

Creative Connection with the Forest

One invitation on this walk involved gathering leaves to make a bouquet. Some were vibrant and wild, others simple and understated.

As we worked with our hands, arranging pieces of nature with care, I could see the calm settle into people’s bodies. Creating with intention—without pressure, without expectation—felt grounding and joyful.

It was a reminder that we don’t always need big or grand experiences to feel connected. Sometimes, a small bundle of leaves and a quiet moment can shift everything.

Closing with Pine Needle Tea

We ended our time together by sharing a warm cup of pine needle tea and a few light snacks. This simple ritual helps bring us back into our bodies, inviting integration and grounding after the walk.

There’s something powerful about sitting in silence, sipping tea, and sharing space after such a gentle and meaningful journey.

In those closing moments, you could feel the soft energy of gratitude in the air.

An Invitation to Join

Every time I guide a walk, I’m reminded of the power of nature—and the strength it takes to slow down in a world that tells us to keep going.

If this glimpse into the experience spoke to you, I’d love to invite you to join one of my upcoming Walks.

You don’t need to prepare or be anything other than yourself. Just come, breathe, and let the forest hold you.

Hope to see you in the forest soon. 🌲
